COVID-19 Strikes Thomanerchor Leipzig

By Dejan Vukosavljevic

Thomanerchor Leipzig has announced that it will shut down until at least Jan. 10, 2021.

The impending hard lockdown in Saxony and all of Germany, along with the confirmed COVID-19 cases in its ranks, has forced the famed choir to immediately cease all operations and cancel Advent and Christmas performances.

“Christmas without the Thomanerchor is actually inconceivable,” said the Mayor of Leipzig Dr. Skadi Jennicke.  “Unfortunately, we have to get used to this situation. The virus did not spare the choir either, and there are confirmed infection cases among the singers as well.

“It pains me very much that they cannot sing at the Christmas service this year. But the health protection of the singers and the worshippers comes first, ” concluded Jennicke.
