Court Street Music to Stream After Dinner Opera Company’s ‘Sacco and Vanzetti’

After Dinner Opera Company is set to stream its September performances of “Sacco and Vanzetti” on Oct. 30, 2022.

Court Street Music of Valley Stream, NY, will present the showcase, which will be launched via Zoom. The video is newly edited and subtitled.

The opera premiered on Sept. 10 and 11, 2022, at Lehman College Studio Theatre under the musical direction of Leonard Lehrmann, who completed the work initially begun by Marc Blitzstein; Lehrmann also conducted. Benjamin Spierman directed. The opera starred Christopher Remkus as Nicolo Sacco and Michael Niemann as Bartolomeo Vanzetti. They were joined by David Anchel, David Aubrey, Sarah Blaze, Kevin Courtemanche, Jonathan Z. Harris, Aumna Iqbal, Karen Jolicoeur, Andrew Klima, Josh Minkin, Perri Sussman, Christopher Tefft, Zachary Tirgan, Helene Williams, Henry Yen, and members of The Metropolitan Philharmonic Chorus and Orchestra.

Blitzstein started the work in 1959 when he was commissioned by the Ford Foundation. He died in 1964, leaving the work unfinished. The opera tells the story of a shoemaker and fish peddler, both Italian immigrants, who were accused of murdering a guard and paymaster in South Braintree, Massachusetts,  in 1920.
