Countertenor John Holiday Scores Major Victory on ‘The Voice’

By David Salazar

Famed countertenor John Holiday has scored a major success on NBC’s “The Voice.”

The countertenor provided a blind audition of “Misty” by Ella Fitzgerald, captivating three of the four judges. He ultimately opted for Team Legend.

“Us Johns gotta stick together,” said John Legend as he attempted to win over the countertenor to his side.

“I’m thrilled and honored to be a contestant on Season 19 of NBC’s The Voice,” Holiday told OperaWire. “Especially in the midst of this pandemic, I could have never imagined doing something like this, on such a huge national stage.  Honestly, for the longest time, my dream has been to be able to reach millions of people with my voice, and I’m so grateful for ‘The Voice’ and its platform because it allows me to do that.  In a time and space where so much love, joy and hope is needed, I’m praying that this little guy, from Rosenberg, Texas, can do just that.

“Yes, traditionally, I’ve sung opera, but I’ve always had gospel roots – especially growing up at Calvary Way Missionary Baptist Church, where my Big Mama was the minister of music.  The idea of crossing over into jazz, pop, and gospel has always been on my mind because I wanted to bring the fullest expression of myself to the forefront.  Over the last few years, I’ve increasingly been adding more jazz repertoire to my recitals – so much so that half of my recital is performed with popular jazz standards and gospel music I have arranged,” Holiday continued. “This experience means the world to me.  My endeavor is to have my music in the homes of millions of people around the world. I never could have imagined that artists like Jidenna, Estelle, Jamie Foxx and the Clark Sisters would come to know who I am.  I aim to show people what it looks like when you take a leap of faith to create the change you seek. I’d never presume to be better than any other artist that there is in the world. What I recognize about myself is that I am different. I am an out and proud gay black man, singing in the soprano range, who has something to say. I want to encourage others that no matter the circumstance, or how different you may be, you can do and be anything that you dream of, as long as you’re willing to do the work of making those dreams a reality.”

Holiday is one of the most hailed countertenors in the world, having won the Marian Anderson Vocal Award in 2014 and performing with such companies as the LA Philharmonic, LA Opera, Dutch National Opera, Wolf Trap Opera, Opera Philadelphia, Barbican Center, Carnegie Hall, and the Philharmonie de Paris. He is set to make his Met Opera debut in 2021 in Matthew Aucoin’s “Eurydice” and will also appear as Cherubino at the Dallas Opera.
