Conductor Ingo Metzmacher Cancels Russia Appearances

By Francisco Salazar

German conductor Ingo Metzmacher has canceled his upcoming performances in Russia due to the invasion of Ukraine.

The conductor’s management wrote to the New Opera Theatre in Moscow stating that he would withdraw from a production of “Salome” scheduled from September/October 2022.

In the letter, the conductor’s management stated, “He is shocked by what is happening and strongly condemns the Russian invasion of Ukraine. He does not want to appear in a country that breaks international law in such a blatant way  and arbitrarily destroys the common foundation of a European peace order.”

Metzmacher is the latest musician to cancel his engagements in the country following numerous pop singers including AJR and most notably Russian rapper Oxxymiron.

The conductor next leads a production of “Salome” at the Festival Aix-en-Provence.
