Concurso Tenor Viñas Announces 2024 Winners

The 61st Concurso Tenor Viñas has announced its 2024 winners.

The competition, which took place at the Gran Teatre del Liceu on Sunday, Jan 21, 2024, saw tenor Filipe Manu from New Zealand and mezzo-soprano Marcela Rahal from Brazil take home first prize. The prize comes with 25,000 € and a contract to sing at the Liceu in the next seasons.

The second prize, which consists of a 15,000 € cash prize, went to Russian soprano Mira Alkhovik and third prize went to Portuguese soprano Sílvia Sequeira, who will receive 11,000 €. The fourth prize, a cash prize of 8,000 €, went to U.S. Bass-baritone Christian Pursell.

The fifth prize went to U.K. bass- Baritone Ossian Huskinson who took home 7,000 €, while the sixth prize was awarded to Italian soprano Sabrina Sanza, who received 6,000 €.

The finalists were selected from 500 participants from 56 countries.

This year’s jury included Víctor Garcia de Gomar, Artistic Director of the Gran Teatre del Liceu de Barcelona; Damià Carbonell Nicolau, Dutch National Opera’s Artistic Administrator; Alessandro Galoppini, Casting director of the Teatro alla Scala de Milán; Tobias Hasan, Artistic Director of the Staatsoper Unter den Linden; Peter Mario Katona, Casting director of the Royal Opera House Covent Garden; Joan Matabosch, Artistic Director of the  Teatro Real de Madrid; Cristiano Sandri, Artistic Director of the Teatro Reggio de Torino; Brian Speck, Artistic Administrator of the Metropolitan Opera; bass0baritone José Van Dam; soprano Dame Kiri Te Kanawa; and pianist Roger Vignoles.
