Concert Singers of Cary & NC Central University Choir to Present a Black History Month Concert
By Afton MarkayThe Concert Singers of Cary have announced a joint concert in honor of Black History Month.
The North Carolina Central University Choir (HBCU), the Concert Singers of Cary, and the Durham Symphony Orchestra will present “Voices of the Unarmed.” The program weaves together music, text, and conversation as it explores the themes of justice, love, and resilience.
The choirs will give the world premiere of Herman Whitfield III’s “Overture-Fanfare in G Major,” along with William Henry Curry‘s “Eulogy for a Dream,” narrated by baritone Jason McKinney, and Joel Thompson’s “Seven Last Words of the Unarmed.” NC Central’s Kizazi Alumni Chorale will perform in Thompson’s tribute piece to unarmed Black men killed by police and authority figures. William Henry Curry conducts.
Instrumental works on the program include Smetana’s “The Moldau,” as well as works by Copland and Toscanini.
This free concert is hosted by the Carolina Theatre in Durham, NC. The performance is scheduled for Feb. 14, at 8 p.m. local time.
