By David Salazar

Con Vivo Music is set to present the world premiere of “Chilltown Boogie” on Oct. 2, 2022 in Jersey City.

The showcase, which is a site-specific opera in five vignettes, will feature site-specific performances throughout Jersey City.

The first work is “The Boatman,” which will take place at the J Owen Grundy Pier – Exchange Place. In this work, “a former alcoholic turned born-again Christian discusses his life on the canal.”

That will be followed by “The Hero” at Paulus Hook Park; this vignette features George Washington and Henry Lee talking about the Revolutionary War. Third on the list is “The Mayor,” which will be presented at City Hall Park and deals with newly defeated Frank Hague and mayor John V. Kenny discussing change in Jersey City. That will lead into “The Haunt” at the Old Bergen Cemetery which portrays a ghostly meeting that centers on discussions of underground railroads and generational change. Finally, “The Choice” will take place at Temple Beth-El. In this final work, Rabbi Schweizer will talk about the community of Jewish Immigrants.

The operas will star Daniel Chiu, Amy van Roekel, Colin Levin, Daniel Klein, Sarah Nelson Craft, Charles Williamson, Jonathan R. Green, Kimberli Render, Peter Kendall Clark, and Jessica Bowers. Karina Parker directs and Ben Grow is the music director.

All of the operas were composed by Alon Nechustan.
