Major opera houses in the United Kingdom have canceled performances due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The English National Opera announced that it was canceling all performances but honor all contracts.

Meanwhile the Scottish Opera stated, “In line with advice from the Scottish Government and the announcement from Capital Theatres earlier today that all performances at the Festival Theatre, Edinburgh are postponed, it is with great sadness that we have to cancel our run of Britten’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ at Edinburgh’s Festival Theatre on March 31, April 2, and 4.”

The company added, “Customers who have tickets will automatically receive a full refund from Capital Theatres over the coming weeks. Please be patient as they work through the refund process at this challenging time.”

The London Handel Festival has made the decision to cancel the rest of this year’s program.

Wigmore Hall has also shut down through April 14, 2020. The company noted that it will be sharing performances, masterclasses, talks, and other past events via social media and its website.

The Welsh National Opera has canceled performances stating, “following the UK Government’s press conference this afternoon, we are sorry to confirm that all performances in Southampton this week are cancelled, and Mayflower will be in contact with ticket bookers as soon as possible.”

Update: 3/17

Opera North has announced that “Following official government advice issued yesterday (Monday 16 March), stipulating that people should avoid public buildings including theaters to help slow the spread of coronavirus, the Theatre Royal & Royal Concert Hall in Nottingham will be closed until Sunday 12 April. Ticket holders for the Opera North performances this week will be contacted directly by the box office team at the Theatre Royal and offered the chance to exchange tickets for a future Opera North season or a full refund.”

The Barbican Centre and South Bank Centre are closed until further notice.

The Grange Park Opera has canceled its summer festivaal. Founder Wasfi Kani said, “We are in touch with our opera colleagues and have decided to put the 2020 season on ice. There could be some performances but with things moving so fast, it is difficult to make a concrete plan.

We ask that our valued customers and supporters of Grange Park Opera consider donating the price of their tickets to our Operating Fund rather than requesting a credit note or refund. This will help the charity at a very challenging time.

Thank you for your support and faith in these difficult times . . . and for these indoor times, I have created Spotify playlists to broaden your non-operatic repertoire. More will be added soon.

We will be in touch as soon as possible.”

The English Touring Opera has been forced to cancel the remaining 52 performances on its spring 2020 tour.
