Comicbook Opera ‘Alpha’ Wins Highest Theater Honor In Lithuania

By Polina Lyapustina

Independent “comic-strip” opera “Alpha” received The Golden Stage Cross Award after being nominated “Opera/Operetta/Musical” in 2019. The Golden Stage Cross Award is the highest theater award in Lithuania.

The world premiere of “Alpha” took place on 20th of April 2018 at NOA festival. The work, which was written by Gabrielė Labanauskaitė-Diena and composed by Composer Albertas Navickas, was directed by Gintare Minelgaite (Dr GoraParasit), who also did set and costume design. It was produced by OPEROMANIJA and featured such singers as Nora Petročenko, Nerijus Masevičius, and Ieva Savickaitė.

“Alpha” (or “α”) is a variation on the eternal theme of truth. The truth, the quest for which gives no peace to Isabel — the character in the opera who keeps looking for the burial place of her brother who died at the dawn of Second World War. The truth whose ambiguity disturbs both Isabel‘s mind and the motives of the opera stage directors. The truth whose knowledge is infused with guilt that is trapped inside the wheel of time, and whose beginning and end are as tangible as “the alpha and omega.”

The Golden Stage Cross Awards were held for the first time in 1992 and has been held annually on March 27, on the International Theater Day.
