By David Salazar

On Jan. 30, 2019, composer Juan J. Colomer’s “Dulcinea XL” will have its world premiere in Los Angeles’ Colburn School.

The new work will offer a unique take on “Don Quixote” with an emphasis on such themes as self-acceptance, karma, mistaken identity, body image, and honor. The performance will be supported by LA Grand Ensemble with Ignazio Terrasi conducting the proceedings.

This is Colomer’s second opera, which follows “El Pintor;” that work was commissioned by Madrid’s Teatro Real.” “Dulcinea XL” is an adaptation of two chapters in the famed work by Cervantes and focuses on Don Quixote meeting the ugly peasant woman that he idealizes as Dulcinea and his latter exploitation by the Duke and Duchess.

The production will star Xavier Prado as Don Quixotte, Milena Gligic as Sancho, Melissa Treinkman as Dulcinea, David Castillo as Merlin, and Camila Lima as the Duchess. It will also feature dancers Katelyn Sanchez and Meg Murphy.
