Cincinnati Song Initiative Unveils 2022-23 Season

The Cincinnati Song Initiative has announced its 2022-23 season.

The season opens with “To the Distant Beloved,” which will feature songs in Italian, German, and English by such composers as Tosti, Albéniz, Beethoven, Ryan, Florence Price, Charles Brown, H. Leslie Adams, and Undine Smith Moore. Performers include Tyler Duncan, Samuel Martin, Erika Switzer, and Chabrelle Williams.

Performance Date: Sept. 24, 2022

Next up is “The Belletrists: Friedrich Rückert,” which will showcase songs by Mahler, Strauss, Robert Schumann, and Clara Schumann. Soloists include Rhoslyn Jones, Samuel Kidd, Christina Lalog Seal, and Allen Perriello.

Performance Date: Nov. 6, 2022

In January, the company will present the Winter Song Festival, which will include the Cincinnati songSLAM. That competition will feature 12 teams presenting one new song for voice and piano.

Performance Date: Jan. 14, 2023

There will also be a performance of “Narrative of a Slave Woman: Songs of Suffering, Hope, and Freedom. The showcase will present Spirituals with such artists as LaToya Lain and Casey Robards.

Performance Date: Jan. 15, 2023

That will be followed up by a team-up with Queen City Cabaret and the presentation of “Unforgettable.” This presentation will showcase music from the Great American Songbook between 1930 and 1960. The performance will star Mandy Gaines, Sarah Folsom, and Matthew Umphreys.

Performance Date: March 18, 2023

Audiences will then get a chance to hear “Americana: What Shall We Remember,” which includes more American songs by Lori Laitman, Margaret Bonds, Judith Cloud, and Ricky Ian Gordon. The concert stars Jasmine Habersham, Kathryn Leemhius, and Samuel Martin.

Performance Date: May 7, 2023

The season ends with the digital performance of “Let It Be New,” which features the premiere of songs taking part in the “National Association of Teachers of Singing” composer mentorship program.

Performance Date: July 25 & 30, 2023
