Chicago City Opera will present the Chicago premiere of Heinrich Marschner’s “Der Vampyr” this October.

The opera with a libretto by Wilhelm August Wohlbrück will be staged Oct. 7 at Colvin House, Oct. 9 at Fulton St. Collective, and Oct. 11 at the Skokie Theater. Alexandra Enyart, CCO’s artistic director, will conduct, with SarahAnn Sutter directing.

The cast includes baritone Jeremiah Strickler as Lord Ruthven, tenor Jordan Loyd as Edgar Aubry, soprano Jessie Lyons as Malwina, baritone Keaton Payne as Humphrey von Davenaut, soprano Ariel Emma as Janthe, mezzo soprano Molly Clementz as Emmy Perth, tenor Bat Collazo as George Dibdin and baritone Kevin Wheatle as John Berkley. Pianist Jordan Crice performs an arrangement of the orchestra part.

“First rising to popularity in the 18th century, gothic literature was having a resurgence in the 1820s,” Enyart said, per an official press release. “Marschner’s ‘Der Vampyr,’ though rarely performed in the U.S. today, was highly successful when it opened in 1828. Coming off the heels of German supernatural opera ‘Der Freischütz’ by Carl Maria von Weber, and foreshadowing another, Richard Wagner’s ‘The Flying Dutchman,’ ‘Der Vampyr’ is full of stunning German Romantic music.”
