Cheffins to Sell Off Work of Famed Designer & Dame Joan Sutherland Collaborator Michael Stennett

Cheffins is set to sell the contents of the studio of famed designer Michael Stennett on Feb. 24, 2022.

Stennett worked in partnership with such noted companies as The Metropolitan Opera, New York, The Royal Opera House, Drottningholm Court Theatre, Sweden, English National Opera, Ottawa Festival, Malmö Ballet, Welsh National Opera and the Australian Opera, designing costumes for such artists as Dame Joan Sutherland, Kiri Te Kanawa, Kathleen Battle, and Marilyn Horne, among many others. He worked most extensively with Sutherland for three decades.

Among the items being sold are approximately 300 paintings and drawings by Michael Stennett, including costume designs for performances from 1967 through to 1984 of such works as “Le Nozze di Figaro” from the Australian Opera; “Julius Caesar” from the English National Opera; and “Werther” from The Royal Opera House, amongst others.

Stennett passed away in 2020 at the age of 74.
