Celso Albelo Releases First Album on Sony Classical

By David Salazar

Sony Classical has added yet another opera star to its roster, this time in the form of lyric tenor Celso Albelo. The tenor is making his debut recording with the company, which was released on Friday.

The album, entitled “Íntimamente,” will take us through the tenor’s Spanish roots and his love for Latin American music. It will feature music from such composers as Juan Quintero and Joaquín Turina, among many others.

“The pieces included in this CD have been with me my whole life from my childhood to my adolescence in Tenerife” Albelo stated in a press release. “All of them suggest a glance to the shores, which separate us, but also connect us with Latin America. I know countries like Argentina or Chile very well, the people and their traditions and, since I am very young, in my island I have had contact with American folklore, one of my passions.”

The addition of Albelo, a lyric tenor who specializes in the bel canto repertoire, furthers Sony’s grip on the opera recording industry. They have added a number of major artists of the years, such as Jonas Kaufmann, Juan Diego Flórez, Plácido Domingo, Sonya Yoncheva, Vittorio Grigolo, Pretty Yende, and many more. A number of these artists were formerly with the Decca and Deutsche, the companies directly in competition with Sony.
