CD/DVD Releases -Week of May 22: Joan Sutherland, Plácido Domingo & Aida Garifullina Lead New Releases

This week three star-studded DVD will invade markets. The first stars Joan Sutherland and Alfredo Kraus while the other stars Plácido Domingo in a signature role. Finally, audiences will get to see rising star Aida Garifullina in one of her early triumphs.

Sutherland’s “Lucrezia Borgia”

The premiere release of the week is Joan Sutherland’s acclaimed “Lucrezia Borgia.” Opus Arte is releasing the historic performance in a remastering from the Royal Opera House with Alfredo Kraus. The performance is conducted by the soprano’s husband Richard Bonynge and also stars Anne Howell and Stafford Dean.

Domingo’s “Un Ballo in Maschera”

Opus Arte will also re-release Plácido Domingo’s “Un Ballo in Maschera” from the Royal Opera House. The historic production by Otto Schenk also stars Katia Ricciarelli and Piero Cappuccilli with Claudio Abbado conducting.

“The Golden Cockerel”

The Mariinsky theater series continues with Rimsky-Korsakov’s “The Golden Cockerel.” The theater has lined up a star-studded cast including rising star Aida Garifullina and Andrei Popov. The new set is a double disc that includes a DVD and Blu-Ray.
