CD/DVD Releases -Week of May 1: Diana Damrau Rediscovers Meyerbeer

By Francisco Salazar

The divas rule this week’s releases with three distinct CDs providing rarely performed music as Diana Damrau and Sonia Prina rediscover the music of Gluck and Meyerbeer.

Meyerbeer rediscovered

In Diana Damrau’s latest album, “Grand Opera,” the German soprano puts a spotlight on the often overlooked music of  Meyerbeer. Not only does she perform arias from the composer’s more famous opera like “L’Africaine” and “Le Prophete,” but she also has a number of world premiere recordings and performs music in Italian and German. The CD will be reviewed by OperaWire, so stay tuned. Erato releases and Damrau will be present at the Met Opera shop to sign copies of the CD.

Rauzzini Arias

Sopranos Meredith Hall and soprano Stefanie True sing arias and scenes of Rauzzini’s music for Centaur’s new CD. The CD contains arias and scenes from “Piramo e Tisbe” as well as “L’ali d’amore.” The CD will be released on May 5.

Gluck

Sonia Prina will release an album entitled ‘Heroes in Love.” The album contains a number of arias from “Demetrio” and contains numerous world premiere recordings. Ruben Jais conducts the CD, which will be released by Glossa. The album is scheduled for release this week in Europe with no US release yet to be announced.
