Malin Byström & Juan Diego Flórez Headline New Releases

Two of opera’s biggest stars get the spotlight this week. On one hand, you get one of the great singing actresses of our time in a breakout role. Opposite her is one of the world’s best tenors singing reperotire we aren’t used to hearing from him.

Salome 

Malin Byström takes on the title role of Salome in Strauss’ masterwork. The performance marked the soprano’s debut in the role with the Dutch National Opera. Warner Music Group Germany release the new DVD, which is conducted by Daniele Gatti and also stars Evgeny Nikitin, Lance Ryan, and Doris Soffel.

Bésame Mucho

Juan Diego Flórez releases his second solo album for Sony Classical, in which the tenor both sings and plays the guitar. The album represents the Latin American continent in 18 stages, using songs that are exemplary of the people and countries. The musical journey includes the Venezuelan “Caballo viejo,” music from Colombia, and the Argentine protest song “Sólo le pido a Dios.” The album also includes “Aquarela do Brasil” from Brazil as well as classics such as “Guantanamera” and other classics.
