CD / DVD Releases – Week of March 25

Two Rarities Lead New Releases With Joyce El-Khoury & Elizabeth Llewellyn

By Francisco Salazar

Two rarities make up this week’s major releases. One is a world premiere recording and the other is a rarely performed choral piece. Both recordings have incredibly well-established casts led by two masters. Here are our recommendations for this week’s major releases.

L’Ange de Nisida

Donizetti’s rediscovered work gets it world premiere recording from a live performance at the Royal Opera House with a cast that includes Joyce El-Khoury, Junghoon Kim, Laurent Naouri, and Vito Priante.

Sir Mark Elder conducts the recording with the Royal Opera Orchestra and Chorus. Opera Rara releases the new recording.

Elgars’ Caractacus

The Huddersfield Choral Society and Orchestra of Opera North are led by Martyn Brabbins in Elgar’s choral piece. The soloists include Elizabeth Llewellyn, Elgan Llyr Thomas, Christopher Purves, Alastair Miles, and Roland Wood in this Hyperion release.
