
Cast Change: Iurii Samoilov to Sing Title Role of ‘Eugene Onegin’ at Metropolitan Opera
By Francisco SalazarThe Metropolitan Opera has announced a cast change for its production of “Eugene Onegin.”
The company said that Ukrainian Baritone Iurii Samoilov will sing the title role, replacing the originally scheduled Russian baritone Igor Golovatenko.
Golovatenko also recently canceled a new production of “Rigoletto” at the Bayerische Staatsoper and “Un Ballo in Maschera” at the Paris Opera.
Samoilov made his Met debut in Schaunard in “La Bohème” in 2022 and recently performed in the production in 2025. He recently performed “Eugene Onegin” in Teatro San Carlo in Naples, Detroit Opera, and Teatro Real.
He is set to join a cast that includes Asmik Grigorian, Maria Barakova, Stanislas de Barbeyrac, and Alexander Tsymbalyuk. Timur Zangiev conducts the production which opens on April 20 and runs through May 16.
