Cast Change For Opera Rara’s ‘Il Paria’

Celso Albelo has canceled his participation in Opera Rara’s performances of Donizetti’s “Il Paria.”

The work, which is scheduled to be performed at the Barbican Theatre on June 8, will now star René Barbera.

The tenor will join a cast that includes Albina Shagimuratova, Misha Kiria, and Marko Mimica with Sir Mark Elder conducting the performance. The Britten Sinfonia and the Opera Rara Chorus will accompany soloists.

The work is noted as Donizetti’s first tragic finale. According to Opera Rara, “all the way through the opera there’s evidence of him trying to avoid the usual solutions. Also novel is the use of the chorus, the constant diving into arioso and a highly inventive orchestral palette all the way through. Il Paria marks an important moment in Donizetti’s career and it went on record as saying that he was especially proud of the piece.

Barbera is scheduled to return to the Wiener Staatsoper for “L’Elisir d’Amore” before returning to Festival Castell Peralada for “La Traviata. ”
