Cast Change: Étienne Dupuis Joins Wiener Staatsoper’s ‘Carmen’

By Francisco Salazar

The Wiener Staatsoper has announced a cast change for “Carmen” on Oct. 17, 2026.

The company said that Étienne Dupuis will step into the role of Escamillo.

Dupuis added, “I couldn’t say no when the Wiener Staatsoper asked me to step in as Escamillo in ‘Carmen’ tomorrow. It may not be my favorite role, but I love this house and its audience so much. I’m delighted that this will be my third production there this season, with two more still to come! Looking forward to sharing the stage with Stéphanie d’Oustrac (Carmen), Roberto Alagna (Don José) and Anna Bondarenko (Micaëla) in the other main roles, in Calixto Bieito’s production, conducted by Henrik Nánási. Toi toi toi to everyone for tomorrow!”

This season, Dupuis is also set to to perform in productions of “Don Carlos,” and “The Pearl Fishers” at the Wiener Staatsoper. He already performed in a production of “Macbeth” earlier this season.
