Carrie Hennessey, ‘Elizabeth Cree’ Among Major Highlights of West Edge Opera’s 2020 Festival

By David Salazar

The West Edge Opera has announced its 2020 festival lineup.

The season will open with Janacek’s “Katya Kabanova,” which will star Carrie Hennessey in the title role. Hennessey previously performed at West Edge Opera in a production of Jake Heggie’s “The End of the Affair” back in 2014.

Afterward, the company will showcase “Elizabeth Cree” by Kevin Putts and Mark Campbell. The opera had its world premiere at Opera Philadelphia back during the 2017-18 season.

The festival will draw to an end with “Eliogabolo” by Francesco Cavalli. The work will star countertenor Randall Scotting in the title role. The opera was composed in 1667 but was banned in Cavalli’s lifetime and was never actually performed until 1999.

The company will unveil more casting information and venues for the performances at a later date.

The West Edge Opera’s 2019 edition is underway with such works as “The Threepenny Opera,” “Orfeo and Euridice” and “Breaking the Waves.”
