The Staatsoper unter der Linden has announced that coloratura soprano Caroline Wettergreen will take over the role of Die Königin der Nacht in Mozart and Schikaneder’s “Die Zauberflöte” for the performances on Dec. 27, 2020 at 3:00 p.m. CET, and Jan. 10, 2021.

Wettergreen will replace Antonina Vesenina and join a cast that includes René Pape in the role of Sarastro, Siyabonga Maqungo as Tamino, Mojca Erdmann in the role of Pamina, Gyula Orendt in the role of Papageno, and Liubov Medvedeva as Papagena. The cast will also include Roman Trekel, Florian Hoffmann, Anna Samuil, Katharina Kammerloher, Anna Kissjudit, Andrés Moreno García, Frederic Jost, and Spencer Britten.

Alexander Soddy conducts the production by August Everding.

Caroline Wettergreen recently performed the role of Blonde in Mozart’s “Die Entführung aus dem Serail” and the role of Princess in Abrahamsen’s “The Snow Queen” at the Bayerische Staatsoper; the role of Die Königin der Nacht in “Die Zauberflöte” at the Glyndebourne Festival and BBC Proms; and the role of Zerlina in Mozart’s “Don Giovanni” at Den Norske Opera, among others.

The soprano is slated to go back onstage on Oct. 31 in the role of Nachtigall in the rarely performed “Die Vögel” at the Bayerische Staatsoper.
