Caroline Wenborne made her unexpected debut as Amelia in Verdi’s ‘Simon Boccanegra.’

The soprano announced via social media that on Oct. 29, 2019, she was called in at the Wiener Staatsoper to make her role debut when Marina Rebeka canceled the performance due to illness.

Wenborne is an ensemble member at the Vienna house and has performed Fiordiligi in “Così fan tutte” and Donna Anna in “Don Giovanni.”

She also appeared on the recording of Wagner’s Ring Cycle as Gutrune on Deutsche Grammophon with Christian Thielemann in 2011. The soprano has also performed Mascha and Chloe in Tchaikovsky’s “Pique Dame,” Emma in Mussorgsky’s “Khovanshchina,” 4th Maid in “Elektra” and Marianne Leitmetzerin in “Der Rosenkavalier.”

Rebeka next performs at the Teatro alla Scala’s Japan tour and in a revival in Tchaikovsky’s “Euegen Onegin” at the Wiener Staatsoper.
