Carmela Remigio, Riccardo Massi & Veronica Simeoni Headline Teatro Comunale Di Bologna’s 2019 Season
By Francisco SalazarThe Teatro Comunale di Bologna has announced its 2019 season with 10 productions all year. The Italian company is giving its native repertory most of the stage-time, with a total of seven productions this season; there are two German works and one in English, that will also appear.
So let’s dive in and break it down.
“Il Trovatore” opens the season with a lineup that includes Riccardo Massi and Roberto de Biaso splitting time in the title role. The new production, directed by Robert Wilson, will also Dario Solari and Vasily Ladyuk as the Count, Guanqun Yu, and Marta Torbidoni as Leonora and Nino Surguladze and Cristina Melis as Azucena. Pinchas Steinberg conducts the production.
Performance Dates: Jan. 22-29, 2019
Ausrine Stundyte and Madina Karbeli share the title role in “Salome” alongside Tuomas Pursio and Sebastian Holececk, who share Jochanaan. Ian Storey, Doris Soffel, and Lioba Braun round out the cast. Juraj Valčuha conducts the revival of Gabriele Lavia’s production.
Performance Dates: Feb. 15-20, 2019
Antonino Siragusa and Diego Godoy headline “Il Barbiere di Siviglia” with Cecilia Molinari and Serena Malfi alternating Rosina. Vincenzo Nizzardo and Roberto De Candia alternating the title role. Andrea Concetti rounds out the cast with Federico Santi conducting.

Alberto Gazale sings the title role in “Rigoletto” alongside Stefan Pop and Desirée Rancatore. Lara Lagni sings some performances as Gilda while Abramo Rosalen and Anastasia Boldyreva round out the cast as Sparafucile and Maddalena.
Performance Dates: March 19-30, 2019
Mariangela Sicilia and Luisa Tambaro alternate Violetta in “La Traviata” with Francesco Castoro and Wang Chuanyue sharing the role of Alfredo. Angelo Veccia and Simone Del Savio sing Germont with Renato Palumbo conducting the entire run.
Performance Dates: April 28-May 8, 2019
Hui He and Ana Lucrecia Garcia sing the title role of “Turandot” with Gregory Kunde and Antonello Palombi alternating Calaf. In Sung Sim and Alessandro Abis alternate Timur while Mariangela Sicilia and Francesca Sassu take turns as Liù. Valerio Galli conducts the revival.
Performance Dates: May 28-June 7, 2019
“Sweeney Todd” comes to the stage in a production by Rosetta Cucchi. Stefano Squarzina conducts the production with a cast to be announced.
Performance Dates: June 19-23, 2019
Giorgia Guerra directs a new production of Rossini’s comic gem “L’Italiana in Algeri” with a cast that includes Maria Ostroukhova and Vittoria Vimercati sharing the title role. Milos Bulajic and Biao Li perform Lindoro while Matias Moncada and Aleksandr Utkin alternate Mustafa. Nikolas Nägele conducts.
Performance Dates: July 9-14, 2019
Emily Magee and Magdalena Anna Hoffman sing Leonora in “Fidelio” with Erin Caves and Daniel Frank alternating as Florestan. Lucio Gallo, Sebastian Holececk, and Nicolò Donini round out the cast. Georges Delnon directs the new production with Asher Fisch conducting.
Performance Dates: Nov. 10-16, 2019
The season closes with a double bill of “Cavalleria Rusticana” and “Pagliacci” in a new production by Emma Dante. Veronica Simeoni and Sonia Ganassi headline Mascagni’s masterpiece with Roberto Aronica and Angelo Villari singing Turiddu.
Dalibor Jenis and Fabian Veloz round out the cast alternating Alfio. Then Carmela Remigio and Carmen Solis take turns as Nedda while Stefano La Colla and Angelo Villari take on Canio. Dalibor Jenis and Fabian Veloz also perform in Leoncavallo’s masterpiece while Vittorio Prato sings Silvio. Frédéric Chaslin conducts.
