Carmela Remigio, Florian Boesch, & Günther Groissböck Highlight Theater an der Wien’s 2020-21 Season

The Theater an der Wien has announced its 2020-21 season featuring 13 new productions, chamber opera, and opera in concert.

Productions 

The season opens with Leoncavallo’s “Zazà” starring Svetlana Aksenova in the title role, Nikolai Schukoff, Christopher Maltman, Dorothea Herbert, and Enkelejda Shkosa. Stefan Soltész conducts the new production by Christof Loy.

Performance Dates: Sept. 16-27, 2020

Wayne Marshall conducts a new production of Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess by Matthew Wild. The production will star two casts including Eric Greene and Simon Shibambu as Porgy, Nicole Cabell and Jeanine de Bique as Bess, Nadine Benjamin and Brandie Sutton as Clara, Nmon Ford as Crown, Ray M. Wade and Zwakele Tshabalala as Sportin’ Life, Mary Elizabeth Williams and Pumeza Matshikiza as Serena and Tichina Vaughn as Maria.

Performance Dates: Oct. 14-24, 2020

Florian Boesch, Cristina Pasaroiu, Giulia Semenzato, Robert Gleadow, and Katie Coventry star in Mozart’s “Le Nozze di Figaro” with Alfred Dorfer directing. Stefan Gottfried conducts the masterpiece.

Performance Dates: Nov. 12-23, 2020

Rameau’s “Platée” will be conducted by William Christie in a production by Robert Carsen. The cast includes Marcel Beekman, Jeanine de Bique, Cyril Auvity, Marc Mauillon, Edwin Crossley-Mercer, Emmanuelle de Negri, Emilie Renard, Ilona Revolskaya, and Padraic Rowan.

Performance Dates: Dec. 14-30, 2020

Massenet’s Thaïs will star Nicole Chevalier in the title role, Josef Wagner as Athanael, and Roberto Saccà as Nicias. Leo Hussain conducts Peter Konwitschny’s production.

Performance Dates: Jan. 19-30, 2021

Oksana Lyniv conducts Donizetti’s rarely performed “Belisario” in a production by Nigel Lowery. Roberto Frontali sings the title role alongside Carmela Remigio, Iryna Zhytynska, and Paolo Fanale.

Performance Dates: Feb. 16-27, 2021

Bo Skovhus, Ausrine Stundyte, Natascha Petrinsky, and Nikolai Schukoff star in Prokofiev’s “The Fiery Angel.” The production by Andrea Breth will be conducted by Constantin Trinks.

Performance Dates: March 17-28, 2021

Christopher Moulds conducts Handel’s “Saul” in a revival of Claus Guth’s production. The cast is set to include Florian Boesch, Anna Prohaska, Giulia Semenzato, Jake Arditti, Rupert Charlesworth, Rafał Tomkiewicz, David Webb, Andrew Morstein, and Paul Lorenger.

Opera in Concert 

Porpora’s “Carlo il Calvo” will be conducted by George Petrou and star Max Emanuel Cencic, Franco Fagioli, Julia Lezhneva, Bruno de Sá, Suzanne Jerosme, and Nian Wang.

Performance Date: Sept. 20, 2020

Franco Fagioli takes on the title role of Handel’s “Oreste” with Maxim Emelyanychev conducting Il Pomo d’oro. The cast also includes Julia Lezhneva, Francesca Aspromonte, Krystian Adam, Renato Dolcini, and Francesca Ascioti.

Performance Date: Nov. 15, 2020

Stefan Gottfried conducts Beethoven’s “Egmont” and “Leonore” with Florian Boesch.

Performance Date: Nov. 28, 2020

Robert King conducts Handel’s “Messiah” with Soraya Mafi.

Performance Date: Dec. 17, 2020

Max Emanuel Cencic stars in Hasse’s “Cajo Fabrizio” alongside Nian Wang, Suzanne Jerosme, Sophie Junker, Bruno de Sá, Nicholas Tamagna, and Sergei Godin. Martyna Pastuszka conducts.

Performance Date: Jan. 25, 2021

Schubert’s “Winterreise” will be performed by Florian Boesch and Malcolm Martineau in a production by Ingo Kerkhove.

Performance Date: Jan. 29, 2021

Lenneke Ruiten stars in Salieri’s “Armida” with Teresa Iervolino, Salome Jicia, and Ashley Riches. Christophe Rousset conducts Les Talens Lyriques.

Performance Date: Feb. 19, 2021

Florian Boesch presents a program entitled “Himmelerde” with music by Schubert, Schumann, Mahler, and Webern. Andreas Schett conducts the production by Michael Vogel also featuring Nikola Hillebrand.

Performance Date: Feb. 26, 2021

Vivica Genaux stars in Vivaldi’s “Agrippo” with Marie Lys, Giuseppina Bridelli, Delphine Galou, and Luigi Di Donato. Fabio Biondi conducts the Europa Galante.

Performance Date: March 22, 2021

René Jacobs conducts Haydn’s “Orlando Paladino” with Thomas Walker, Robin Johannsen, Konstantin Krimmel, Sunhae Im, and Sophie Harmsen.

Performance Date: April 19, 2021

Handel’s “Tamerlano” concludes the operas in concert.

Performance Date: April 22, 2021

Kammeroper

Vivaldi’s “Bajazet” is set to be conducted by Roger Diaz Cajamarca and directed by Krystian Lada. The opera will star Rafał Tomkiewicz, Sofia Vinnik, Andrew Morstein, Valentina Petraeva, and Miriam Kutrowatz.

Performance Dates: Sept. 26-Oct. 13, 2020

Angelika Kirchschlager, Alfred Dorfer, and Elizabete Šīrante perform a recital of music by Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, Bizet, Mahler, and Korngold.

Performance Date: Oct. 10, 2020-June 8, 2021

Cavalli’s “Giasone” will be conducted by Benjamin Bayl and directed by Georg Zlabinger. The cast will include Rafał Tomkiewicz, Valentina Petraeva, Ekaterina Protsenko, Ivan Zinoviev, Miriam Kutrowatz, Andrew Morstein, and Benjamin Chamandy.

Performance Dates: Nov. 29, 2020-Jan. 12, 2021

Andrew Morstein, Sebastià Peris, Sofia Vinnik, Ivan Zinoviev, and Dumitru Mădăraşăn star in Rossini’s Il Barbiere di Sivigilia with George Jackson conducting and Christoph Zauner directing.
