Atlanta-based Capitol City Opera Company will present a production of Gounod’s “Roméo et Juliette” to open its 37th season.

The opera, which is written by Barbier and Carré, is set to open on March 6, with additional performances on March 7 and 8 at the Conant Performing Arts Center at Oglethorpe University.

Rachele Eve Holmes and Michael Vavases will star as the ill-fated lovers with August Bair as Mercutio, Elizabeth Sarian as Stéphano, and Dylan Cronan as Frère Laurent. Michael Nutter, the company’s Artistic Director, will stage the production with Catherine Giel undertaking musical direction. A five-piece orchestra will be conducted by Michael Giel.

“I have always wanted to do this opera. The score is beautiful beyond belief. The story is a classic. And everyone from all walks of life are familiar with the tale,” stated Nutter in a press release.
