
Cape Town Philharmonic Appoints New Principal Conductor
By Francisco SalazarThe Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra has appointed a new Principal Conductor and Conductor Laureate.
The orchestra said that Arjan Tien will be the new principal conductor starting January 2026, while Bernhard Gueller will be the Conductor Laureate for Life after more than 30 years of contribution at the highest level of classical music in Cape Town and South Africa.
Gueller held the position of Principal Conductor since 2016.
Tien was recently appointed as an associate professor at Stellenbosch University, where he will continue his exemplary work in training young conductors. Tien has also been a teacher at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam and the Conservatoire of Maastricht and has held master classes in cities such as Amsterdam, Cape Town, Bucharest and Copenhagen.
He was the As Chief conductor of the Magogo Chamber Orchestra from 2006-2012 and the Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the Marine Band of the Royal Netherlands Navy from 2017-2024. He has conducted such orchestras as the North Netherlands Orchestra, Wermland Opera Karlstad, WDR Funkhausorchester Cologne, and the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra.
