Cape Town Opera Unveils 2023 Season

Cape Town Opera has unveiled its 2023 season.

First up is “Masterclass,” featuring Sandra Prinsloo as Maria Callas in a production by Cape Town Opera Artistic Director Magdalene Minnaar. Musical direction will be provided by José Dias, who will also act and play the piano. The showcase will feature music by Verdi, Puccini, and Bellini, with artists such as Brittany Smith and CTO’s Judith Neilson Young Artists Alida Scheepers and Tyler Lamani.

Performance Date:  Feb. 20- April 2, 2023

Next up is “Spirituals” with musical director and pianist Marvin Kernelle at the helm. Theshowcase features arrangements of “Baba Yetu,” “Muhona Makutu Tanga,” “Mahlo A Bona,” “Elijah Rock,” “Ev’ry Time I Feel The Spirit,” “Didn’t My Lawd Deliver Daniel?” and “Give Me Jesus,” among other works.

Performance Date:  Feb. 26, 2023

That will be followed up by Rossini’s “Stabat Mater” with Cape Town Opera soloists, the Cape Town Symphony Choir and the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra under conductor Adam Szmidt.

Performance Date:  April 8, 2023

Then, audiences can check out “The Pearl Fishers.”

Performance Date:  April 10-14, 2023 

There will then be a Gala Concert.

Performance Date:  July 2023 

Pauline Viardot’s “Cendrillon” takes the stage.

Performance Date:  July 4-8, 2023

Then it’s time for “Tosca.

Performance Date:  July 21-30 & Sept. 9 – 17, 2023

In October, audiences can check out “La Traviata.”

Performance Date:  Oct. 25 -29, 2023
