Cape Town Opera (CTO) has made history by releasing a filmed performance of Verdi’s “Aida” at Ster-Kinekor movie theaters nationwide.

Released on Sept. 27, 2025, this is the first time a South African-produced opera has been released on the silver screen.

The production was directed by Artistic Director Magdalene Minnaar and reimagined Verdi’s epic in an Afrofuturist style that fused South African heritage with contemporary aesthetics.

Conductor Kamal Khan led the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra alongside a cast starring Nobulumko Mngxekeza, Lhukanyo Moyake, Nonhlanhla Yende, and Conroy Scott, among others.

“It is with great pride that we share this momentous milestone in the life of Cape Town Opera,” said Minnaar per an official press release. “Our critically acclaimed production of Aida has made history as the first South African opera to be filmed and released in cinemas in this country. The achievement represents not only a triumph for our company but a significant step for the visibility and reach of South African opera on the global stage.”
