Canadian Opera Company to Stream Rufus Wainwright’s ‘Hadrian,’ Starring Thomas Hampson & Karita Mattila

The Canadian Opera Company will stream “Hadrian” for one night only on August 10, 2020.

Starting at 6:30 p.m. ET, the company will join forces with the Montréal Pride Festival to host a free stream of the opera, accompanied by a watch party event that will feature a live Q & A with composer Rufus Wainwright and librettist Daniel MacIvor.

“This is the first time that ‘Hadrian’ is being shared in its entirety online and the first time that the COC is presenting one of our operas using high-quality digital footage,” said COC General Director Alexander Neef in a press release. “It feels particularly fitting for a production that was also the first COC-commissioned opera to debut on our stage at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts.”

The opera, which had its world premiere in 2018, stars Thomas Hampson in the title role alongside Isaiah Bell, Karita Mattila, and Ambur Braid.
