Cambridge Symphony Orchestra to Launch Season with Verdi’s ‘Requiem’

By Logan Martell

On November 4, 2022, the Cambridge Symphony Orchestra will launch their 48th season with back-to-back performances of Verdi’s “Requiem.”

The performances will feature more than 60 students and alumni of the UMass Lowell University Choir and Chamber Singers, under the direction of CSO Music Director Cynthia Woods. This performance will be the largest for the students of UMass since the pandemic began. The soloists for the concerts will include Indra Thomas, Joanna Porackova, Giovanni Formisano, and Ron Loyd, alongside members of the Nashua Valley Chorale led by Anne Watson Born.

“For the music students at UMass Lowell, sharing the stage with the CSO and Nashoba Valley Chorale will be a powerful experience,” said Jonathan Richter, director of the University Choir and Chamber Singers at UMass Lowell. “The Verdi ‘Requiem’ is a bucket-list piece for anyone who loves to sing choral music, but this event carries special significance. Together on stage, professionals, amateurs, and student musicians from many diverse backgrounds will join as one, representing not just a musical achievement but a beautiful collaboration between members of different local communities, generations, and artistic institutions.”

The first performance will be held at UMass Lowell’s Durgin Hall, with the second being held on November 6 at MIT’s Kresge Auditorium; tickets for the Lowell concert are free while the Cambridge show’s ticket price range from $15-25. In accordance with the current CDC protocols in Massachusetts, masks will be optional and proof of vaccination will not be required.
