Terrence McNally’s ‘Master Class’ Returns to Cape Town Opera

By Chris Ruel

The acclaimed play about Maria Callas, “Master Class” by Terrence McNally, returns to Cape Town Opera after Pieter Toerien’s recent sold-out seasons.

The play will take place at the Toyota US Woordfees in Stellenbosch and is scheduled from October 7-10, 2023, at the Adam Small Auditorium.

Directed by Magdalene Minnaar and with musical direction by José Dias, the production stars Sandra Prinsloo as Maria Callas.

The narrative takes place in 1971, with Callas teaching master classes at Juilliard in New York.

While reflecting on her career, she offers her students stern advice and soul-stirring arias.

“Master Class” combines biography with fiction, highlighting the sacrifices artists make for their craft and commemorating Callas’s influence on the 100th anniversary of her birth.
