Calgary Opera Returns to Stage with ‘The Merry Widow’

By David Salazar

Calgary Opera is set to return to its main stage performance series at the South Alberta Jubilee Auditorium with “The Merry Widow” starting on Jan. 29, 2022.

Due to health and safety regulations in Canada, the company will be able to open to 50 percent capacity with all audience members required to wear masks.

The opera will star Aviva Fortunata, Andrew Love, Jacqueline Woodley, Colin Ainsworth, Hugh Russell, Tayte Mitchell, Jeremy Dubé, Clarence Frazer, Julia Krajcovic, Jeddrey Strand, Simran Claire, Dominic Veilleux, Alanna Fraize, and Devon Dubnyk. Tania Miller conducts a production by Omer Ben Seadia.

“If you’re like me, you’ve missed the anticipation before the performance begins – hearing the orchestra tuning, the house lights dimming. Or being enthralled by a stunning rendition of a favorite aria and sharing that moment with everyone around you. There’s nothing like it,” General Director and CEO, Heather Kitchen said in an official statement.

There will be two subsequent performances on Feb. 2 and 4, 2022. This is the first in-person production that the company mounts since it took on “Norma” in January 2020.
