Calgary Opera Announces ‘Valentine’s Day Brunch’

By Nicolas Quiroga

Calgary Opera is set to present a virtual concert and brunch experience entitled “Valentine’s Day Brunch.”

The showcase, scheduled for Feb. 14, 2021, will pair opera classics from such works as “Le Nozze di Figaro” and “Don Giovanni” with jazz numbers. The showcase will be headlined by soprano Sharleen Joynt and mezzo-soprano Marion Newman. Other artists in the showcase include mezzo-sopranos Lilian Brooks and  Alanna  Fraize; sopranos Kallie Clayton and Eden Tremayne; bass-baritone Jeremy Dubé; tenors Scott Rumble and Jeffrey Strand; and pianists Mark  Morash and Mel  Kirby.

“I am so glad Calgary audiences will get to hear Sharleen Joynt virtually since we were unable
to present her onstage this past season,” said Calgary Opera Interim Music Director Mark
Morash in a press release. “Of course, it is obvious that any former participant on The Bachelor can deliver with authority on the day for lovers! Marion Newman, who is presently in Calgary for another Calgary Opera project also has a lot to say about love. She will sing Kurt Weill’s ‘I’m a Stranger Here Myself’ for those who are in-between love affairs.”

Music Director Mark Morash will host the event, which will be filmed by New Jack Films. Audiences can view “Valentine’s Day Brunch” on the Calgary Opera’s official website.
