Buxton International Festival Unveils 2023 Season

The Buxton International Festival has announced its 2023 slate. For the purposes of this article, our focus will be on vocal performances.

Opera

The first opera of the season will be “La Sonnambula” in a production by Harry Fehr. Adrian Kelly conducts.

Performance Dates: July 8 – 22, 2023

Next up is “Il Re Pastore” with Katie Coventry, Ellie Neate, Olivia Carrell, Joseph Doody, and George Curnow. Adrian Kelly conducts and Jack Furness directs.

Performance Dates: July 9 – 20, 2023

The final new opera production of the festival will be “Orlando,” starring Christian Joel, Joanna Harries, Olivia Doutney, Susana MacRae, and Jolyon Loy.

Performance Dates: July 10 – 21, 2023

Concerts

There will also be “Song at Six,” 15-minute concerts at the Pavilion Gardens featuring Young Artists.

Performance Dates: July 7 – 22, 2023

There will also be Festival Masses. First up is the Buxton Madrigal Singers headlining Haydn’s “Little Organ Mass.”

Performance Dates: July 9, 2023

Nicky Spence and Joseph Middleton perform music by Grieg, Schubert, Wolf, Bax, Warlok, and Ireland, among others.

Performance Dates: July 11, 2023

Lucy Crowe and Joseph Middleton will present music by Gershwin, Copland, Barber, Walton, Ireland, and Britten, among others.

Performance Dates: July 12, 2023

The King’s Singers will present a program of music by The Beatles, Schubert, Ravel, Poulenc, Fleetwood Mac, and Williamson, among others.

Performance Dates: July 13, 2023

Dame Sarah Connolly and Joseph Middleton will present music by Schubert, Brahms, Mendelssohn, Fauré, and Schumann, among others.

Performance Dates: July 14, 2023

Ashley Riches and Joseph Middleton perform music by Quilter, Argento, Finzi, Mussorgsky, Schubert, and Nystroem, among others.

Performance Dates: July 15, 2023

The Buxton Madrigal Singers and Festival Soloists will present Mozart’s “Coronation Mass K 317.”

Performance Dates: July 16, 2023

The AMC Gospel Choir will make an appearance.

Performance Dates: July 16, 2023

The “Colour My Song” Williams-Howard Memorial Prize Recital will also take place.

Performance Dates: July 21, 2023

There will be a presentation of “Dame Shirley J. Thompson: Women of the Windrush,” an opera for soprano, piano, and film.

Performance Dates: July 23, 2023

The Buxton Madrigal Singers will also perform Palestrina’s “Missa Brevis.”
