Buxton International Festival Announces 2020 Season

The Buxton International Festival has announces its 2020 season.

For the purposes of this article we will only focus on the opera and oratorio performances announces for the festival.

The operatic offerings begin with Rossini’s “La Donna del Lago” which will star Nico Darmanin, John Irvin and Catherine Carby. Jacopo Spirei directs the production conducted by Adrian Kelly.

Performance Dates: July 5-19, 2020

The second production of the season will be Reynaldo Hahn’s “Ciboulette” with soprano Soraya Mafi in the title role. Jeff Clarke directs the rarely performed work with Wyn Davies conducting.

Performance Dates: July 3-17, 2020

“Acis and Galatea” by George Frideric Handel get a co-production with Early Opera starring soprano Mary Bevan and tenor Nick Pritchard. Christian Curnyn conducts the new production by Martin Constantine.

Performance Dates: July 7-16, 2020

Alice Birch and Tom Coult’s “Violet” gets its world premiere. The work is a Music Theatre Wales production co-commissioned and co-produced with the Aldeburgh Festival and Theatre Magdeburg in association with London Sinfonietta.

Performance Date: July 13, 2020

The final work of the season will be Kate Witley’s “Our Future: In Your Hands.” The new work is an Opera Oratorio about climate change and is a newly commissioned production in collaboration with Royal Overseas League.

Performance Dates: July 10 & 17, 2020
