By David Salazar

The Department of Musical and Sound Arts at the Universidad Nacional de las Artes (DAMus-UNA) will present “Absurdópera” on June 14 at 8 p.m. at the Teatro del Globo in Buenos Aires.

The one-hour opera in two acts, by Gustavo Leone and based on texts by Samuel Beckett and Eugène Ionesco, is mounted by the DAMus-UNA Opera Company alongside the Cuarteto Delta string quartet, with Valeria Martinelli as musical director.

The first act, “Palabras y Música” (“Words and Music”), is based on Beckett’s radio play of the same name and stages a dialogue between Words and Music as two creative forces that collaborate and clash in their attempts to produce poetry, songs, and ideas. The second act, “El Líder” (“Le Maître”), drawn from Ionesco, follows a group of characters  anticipating the arrival of a mysterious leader.

The cast features Naoki Higasiyosihama as Palabras and El joven enamorado, Luca Cristaldi as Croak and El líder, Ariadna Ratti as La joven enamorada, David Bautista as El anunciador, Angelito Ríos as El admirador, and Silvana Soulé as La admiradora.

The Cuarteto Delta consists of violinists Hernán Cupeta and Nicolás Argüello, violist Carla Giallorenzi, and cellist Brian Vaci.

The DAMus-UNA Opera Company is led by artistic and musical director Marta Blanco and artistic and stage director Bea Odoriz.
