Budapest Opera House to Unveil Permanent Exhibit ‘Shattered, Abandoned, Dead…’

By David Salazar

The Budapest Opera House has announced a new permanent exhibit entitled “Shattered, abandoned, dead…”

The exhibit, hosted in the basement of the Hungarian State Opera, will pay tribute to 83 artists and employees who were dismissed and deported because of their descent during the Holocaust.

The idea for the exhibit originated from Sylvie Gábor, who investigated the lives of members who were let go following the introduction of the Second Anti-Jewish Law of 1939 and the German occupation of Hungary in 1944. Those efforts were combined with curation from Márton Karczag, the head of OPERA Archives.

Among those honored are  14 soloists, five conductors and répétiteurs, 27 chorus members, 18 musicians, seven ballet dancers, four administrative employees, and eight technical workers. Of those, 45 were re-employed following World War II, 10 did not survive, and 18 did not return to the company. There were eight employees for which there was no information available after 1945.

The exhibition will be open every Saturday and Sunday starting on Jan. 14, 2023.
