Bryn Terfel, Jessica Pratt & Angela Meade Headline Bilbao Opera’s 2019-20 Season

The Bilbao Opera has announced its 2019-20 season featuring five productions, two company premieres, and a number of debuts by some of the biggest stars. Here is a look at what you can expect next season.

Jessica Pratt opens the season with her acclaimed interpretation of Donizetti’s “Lucia di Lammermoor.” The soprano is joined by Ismael Jordi, Juan Jesús Rodriguez, and Marko Mimica. Marina Monzo and Giulio Pelligra sing the leads as well.

Riccardo Frizza conducts the new production by Lorenzo Mariani.

Performance Dates: Oct. 19 – 28, 2019

Verdi’s “Jerusalem” makes a rare appearance with a cast that includes Jorge de León, Rocío Ignacio, Michele Pertusi, and Pablo Gálvez.

Francesco Ivan Ciampa conducts the new production by Francisco Negrín, which is also the opera’s premiere with the company. The production is part of the Tutto Verdi initiative, which concludes with “Alzira.”

Performance Dates: Nov. 16-25, 2019

Bryn Terfel makes his Bilbao Opera debut singing the title role in “Die Fliegende Holländer” in a new production by Guy Montavon. Irene Theorin sings Senta, Mikhail Petrenko is Daland, and Kristian Benedikt is Erik. Pedro Halffter conducts.

Performance Dates: Jan. 18-27, 2020

Oksana Dyka makes her Bilbao debut in the title role of Puccini’s “La Fanciulla del West” with Marco Berti and Claudio Sgura.

Josep Caballé-Domenech conducts the production by Hugo de Ana, which marks the opera’s premiere with the company.

Performance Dates: Feb. 15-24, 2020

The season concludes with Donizetti’s “Anna Bolena” with Angela Meade in the title role. The opera concludes the Tudor trilogy in Bilbao and also stars Silvia Tro Santafé, Roberto Tagliavini, Celso Albelo, and Margarita Gritskova.

Giampaolo Bisanti conducts the new production by Stefano Mazzonis di Pralafera.

Performance Dates: May 16-25, 2020

Concert 

The Bilbao Opera will present a concert of Rossini works including “‘Giovanna d’Arco” and the Stabat Mater. The concert will showcase Joyce El-Khoury, Marianna Pizzolato, Paolo Fanale, and Simón Orfila. Nicola Luisotti conducts.
