Sir Bryn Terfel has canceled his appearances as Wotan and the Wanderer in Wagner’s Ring at the Vienna State Opera.

The bass-baritone, who was scheduled to appear later this month, will be replaced by Egils Silins in “Das Rheingold” on April 30 and by Tomasz Konieczny in “Die Walküre” on May 1 and “Siegfried” on 7th May. Thomas Johannes Mayer will perform the second cycle.

Vienna’s Ring Cycle is also slated to star Robert Dean Smith as Siegmund, Camilla Nylund as Sieglinde and Petra Lang as Brünhilde. Stefan Vinke will take on the role of Siegfried. Peter Schneider is set to conduct the cycles.

Terfel is renowned for his interpretation as Wotan and the Wanderer and has sung the role in London and in New York. He is scheduled to return to “Die Walküre” at the Edinburgh Festival and will return to his signature Scarpia in Puccini’s “Tosca” at the Metropolitan Opera. He will also sing Verdi’s “Falstaff” at the Royal Opera House and Wagner’s “The Flying Dutchman” at the Baden-Baden Festival.
