Brooklyn Art Song Society to Present ‘Histories III: Renaissance’

By Francisco Salazar

On Dec. 1, the Brooklyn Art Song Society is set to present “Histories III: Renaissance.”

The evening will explore the revolutionary shift of the Seconda pratica with madrigals by Monteverdi and Gesualdo. The concert will also feature music by Hugo Wolf and Benjamin Britten which is set to Michelangelo’s poetry.

This concert marks the first collaboration between BASS and the acclaimed vocal ensemble Variant 6, adding depth to these madrigals and bridging Renaissance and modern expressions of emotion and artistry.

Performers include tenor Dominic Armstrong, bass-baritone Brian Mextorf, and pianist Michael Brofman, alongside Variant 6 members Rebecca Myers, Jessica Beebe, Elisa Sutherland, Daniel Taylor, Steven Eddy, Kevin Payne, and Matt Zucker.

There will be a pre-concert lecture at 4:30 p.m. by NYU’s Larry Wolff which will provide insights into the musical and historical dimensions of the works.
