Brooklyn Art Song Society to Present ‘Circles III: The Second Viennese’

By Francisco Salazar

Brooklyn Art Song Society is set to continue its 2023–24 season on Dec. 1, 2023, at First Unitarian Church of Brooklyn with “Circles III: The Second Viennese School.”

This will be the third of a six-part series exploring connections between composers throughout music history. For this program, the company will present music by Arnold Schoenberg and his students, Alban Berg and Anton Webern.

The concert will include soloists sopranos Maggie Finnegan and Jennifer Zetlan, mezzo-soprano Kate Maroney, and pianists Michael Brofman, Eric Huebner, and Nana Shi. There will also be a pre-concert lecture by Columbia University’s Marilyn McCoy.

Artistic Director Michael Brofman said, “While The Second Viennese School is often used as a convenient grouping for teaching music history and theory, it’s really so much more than a chapter in a textbook. By examining their relationship, we see how deeply our relationships can affect our lives, and in turn how deeply the sweep of history can affect these relationships. As much as the brilliant music of the Second Viennese School still resonates today, so does the personal story of these three men and their complex, intertwined lives.”
