Brooklyn Art Song Society Announces 2022-23 Season

The Brooklyn Art Song Society has announced its 2022-23 season.

The main theme of the season will be “The World at War” and it will kick off with “In Memoriam I.” The showcase will include music by Berg, Ives, Poulenc, Ravel, and Granados. Singers include Amy Owens, Kate Maroney, Joshua Conyers, Mario Diaz-Moresco, and pianists Michael Brofman and Spencer Myer.

Performance Date: Oct. 7, 2022

“In Memoriam II” will feature music by British composers including Finzi, Bell, Butterworth, Gurney, and Venables as performed by Dylan Morrongiello, Steven Eddy, and Brian James Myer accompanied by Michael Brofman, Brent Funderburk, and violist Chieh-Fan Yiu.

Performance Date: Nov. 4, 2022

Hanns Eisler’s “Hollywood Liederbuch” will feature Blythe Gaissert, Devony Smith, Michael Kelly and Brian Mextorf. Michael Brofman will accompany.

Performance Date: Dec. 2, 2022

Kristina Bachrach, Anna Laurenzo, and Thomas Meglioranza will headline “Recovered Voices.” Accompanied by Nathaniel LaNasa and violinist Stanichka Dimitrova, they will perform music by Haas, Klein, Krása, Schulhoff, Ullmann, and Weber, as arranged by Jorell Williams. This concert is dedicated to composers who lost their lives in concentration camps.

Performance Date: Jan. 6, 2023

Britten, Schoenberg, and Shostakovich will center “Rage,” a program showcasing wide-ranging reactions to the horrors of World War II. Alexandra Nowakowski, Sara Couden, Dominic Armstrong, Brian Vu, and Randall Scarlata will perform. Michael Brofman, Dimitri Dover, and Ryan McCullough will be at the piano. The concert also features the Ulysses Quartet.

Performance Date: Feb. 3, 2023

“La Résistance,” featuring Mary Bonhag, Simon Barrad, and Tyler Duncan, will feature music by Auric, Dutilleux, Jolivet, Gilda Lyons, and Poulenc. Michael Brofman, Erika Switzer, and Miori Sugiyami will be at the piano.

Performance Date: March 3, 2023

“The Dichter Project” will focus on Joseph von Eichendorff and features music by Schumann and Wolf. Elisabeth Marsha and Nils Neubert are the soloists with Michael Brofman accompanying.

New Voices Festival

The New Voices Festival will kick off with a recital including European Avant Garde music by Attahir, Birtwistle, Kendall, Reimann, Saariaho, and Thorvaldsdottir. Soloists include Maggie Finnegan, Andrew Fuchs, and Daniel Moody. Accompanists will be Michael Brofman, Renate Rohlfing, and Joel Harder with Chieh-Fan Yiu on viola.

Performance Date: April 6, 2023

Asian music will be the spotlight of the second recital. This one, which stars Jennifer Zeltan, Kristin Gornstein, Fleur Barron, Annie Rosen, and Jeffrey Gavett, will include music by Juhi Bansai, Justine F. Chan, Reena Esmail, Dai Fujikura, Tonia Ko, and Huang Ruo. Pianists Mike Brofman, Myra Huang Jeremy Chan, and Nana Shi will accompany.

Performance Date: May 5, 2023

The final concert in the series will feature music of the Americas by Clarice Assad, Mikhail Johnson, Cecilia Livingston, Tania Leon, Reinaldo Moya, Gabriela Ortiz, and Carlos Simon. Sarah Brailey, Laura Strickling, Sarah Nelson Craft, and Will Liverman star with Michael Brofman, Mila Henry, and Danny Zelibor at the piano.
