Brooklyn Art Song Society Announces 2020-21 Season

The Brooklyn Art Song Society has announced its 2020-21 season, which will be presented digitally via the company’s new streaming service.

The season will feature over 200 songs by 18 composers.

Schubert

At the core of the season’s program will be a series of concerts dedicated to the music of Schubert. The first such event will feature a performance of Schubert’s “Die Schöne Müllerin” with baritone Tyler Duncan and pianist Erika Switzer.

Streaming Date: Oct 10, 2020 

Tenors Daniel McGrew and Joseph Tancredi will join forces with baritones Jorell Williams and Mario Diaz-Moresco to perform “Nacht,” a concert featuring several songs by Schubert. Among the selections on this program are “Die Sterne” and “Der Erlkönig.” Spencer Myer and Michael Brofman will perform at the piano.

Streaming Date: Nov. 14, 2020

Mezzo-soprano Sarah Craft Nelson and tenor Nils Neubert will perform a bonus concert featuring many of Schubert’s greatest hits. Nana Shi will perform at the piano.

Baritone Steven Eddy and pianist Michael Brofman will join forces for “Winterreise.”

Streaming Date: Jan. 16, 2021

Sopranos Amy Owens and Laura Strickling will team up with mezzo-sopranos Kate Maroney, Blythe Gaissert, and Devony Smith for love songs by Schubert. Michael Brofman and Dimitri Dover will perform at the piano.

Streaming Date: Feb. 13, 2021

Soprano Kristina Bachrach, tenor Dominic Armstrong, baritone Michael Kelly, clarinetist, Narek Arutyunian, and pianists Michael Brofman and Joel Harder will perform “Schwanengesang” as well as other selected songs.

New Voices Festival

The Balliett Brothers will re-set Schubert’s “Schwanengesang” in a concert that will also feature Katherine Balch’s study of Schumann’s “Dichterliebe,” which will also be on the program. The concert will feature sopranos Lucy Fitz Gibbon and Molly Netter; tenor Karim Sulayman; baritone Sidney Outlaw; French horn player Laura Weiner; and pianists Natalia Katyukova and Michael Brofman.

Sopranos Mary Bonhag and Elisabeth Marshall will join forces with tenor James Reese, baritone Gregory Feldmann, and pianists Michael Brofman and Danny Zelibor for a concert featuring music by Hagen, Higdon, Larsen, Primosch, Wheeler, and Cipullo.

Streaming Date: May 15, 2021

Sopranos Sarah Brailey and Charlotte Mundy will team up with tenor Andrew Fuchs, baritone Michael Kelly, and pianists Michael Brofman and Miori Sugiyama for a program of music by Rohde, Matheson, Meltzer, and Felsenfeld.
