Bronx Opera to Showcase Poulenc’s ‘Dialogues of the Carmelites’

By Nicolas Quiroga

The Bronx Opera will showcase four performances of Poulenc’s “Dialogues of the Carmelites,” with music and libretto by Francis Poulenc on May 6 through 14, 2023 at the Lovinger Theatre, Lehman College.

The opera production will star Barbee Monk, Alina Tamborini, Hannah Spierman, Michelle Trovato, Annie Chester, Caroline Tye, Tiernan Elizabeth Chase, Sarah Daniels, Zachary Tirgan, Georgina Wu, Jenna Stewart, Vincent Gover, Philip Barsky, and Miguel Pedroza, among others.

Michael Spierman and Eric Kramer will share conducting duties. The production is directed by Benjamin Spierman with set design by Kyle Doughty Higgins, lighting design by Joshua Rose, and costume design by Anthony Paul-Cavaretta.

The world premiere of Poulenc’s masterwork took place at La Scala in French in 1957 and then in the United States it premiered at the San Francisco Opera. Poulenc wished to see “Dialogues of the Carmelites” performed in the vernacular of his local audience and in honor of that wish, this production will be performed in English.
