Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra has become the Resident Orchestra of Brighton Dome.

The designation takes effect this September and is presented as recognition of a partnership approaching its hundredth year.

Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra was founded in 1925 and first performed on Brighton Dome’s Concert Hall stage in 1928, appearing in the venue’s event seasons ever since.

“Today we cement our relationship with BPO after nearly 100 years of traveling side by side,” said Lucy Davies, Director and CEO of Brighton Dome, per an official press release. “In formalizing BPO as our Resident Orchestra we celebrate the power and endurance of the city’s creative collaborations. Brighton Dome and Brighton Festival is proud to be the official home and partner for Joanna MacGregor’s leadership and orchestra.”

“To become Brighton Dome’s Resident Orchestra is a wonderful recognition of BPO’s performances over the last century, and cements an already close partnership,” said Joanna MacGregor, CEO and Music Director of Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra. “We’re looking forward to developing ambitious programmes and artistic collaborations for Brighton audiences.”

The orchestra’s history at the venue includes performances by Myra Hess, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Yehudi Menuhin, Simon Rattle, and Evelyn Glennie. Sir Thomas Beecham served as its first President beginning in 1932, a position later held by Ralph Vaughan Williams and Benjamin Britten.

Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra opens its new season at Brighton Dome on Sept. 27 with a program featuring Rachmaninoff’s “Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini,” Gershwin’s homage to Havana, Piazzolla’s “Spring in Buenos Aires,” and Janáček’s “Sinfonietta.”
