Brick Presbyterian Church to World Premiere New Work by Jonathan Woody

By David Salazar

New York’s Brick Presbyterian Church will present “A Service of Lessons & Carols” on Dec. 17, 2023.

The event will feature music by David Willcocks, Conrad Susa, Ralph Vaughan Williams, June Nixon, John Rutter, Raffaella Aleotti, James Bassi, and Rosephanye Powell as well as the world premiere of Jonathan Woody’s “Magnificat.”

“My background as a church musician from childhood has fostered a deep appreciation of so many staples of the liturgical repertoire, and none more than Magnificat, the joyful proclamation of Mary as she considers the coming birth of the Messiah,” Woody told OperaWire. “I particularly love the text of the devotion, with changes in mood from triumphant to humble, illustrating the power and loving-kindness of God. It allows for boundless inspiration, and I hope my offering finds its place among the many wonderful settings, and brings something full of joy and wonder that captures the spirit of Advent and Mary’s song.”

Woody is a composer and performer who is a member of the Choir of Trinity Wall Street. He has also performed with Kaleidoscope Ensemble, Les Délices, Seraphic Fire, Byron Schenkman and Friends, and TENET Vocal Artists and appeared in works such as “p r i s m,” “Breaking the Waves,” and “Angel’s Bone,” among others.

The performance kicks off at 4 p.m. local time.
