Brian Jagde & Levy Sekgapane Headline New DVD/CD Releases – June 10

Five new DVDs are set for release this week. They include four rarely performed works and one of the most popular operas in the repertoire. Here is a look.

Das Wunder Der Heliane

Naxos is set to release Korngold’s rarely performed opus, which was recorded at the Deutsche Oper Berlin’s 2018 festival season. The acclaimed performance stars American soprano Sara Jakubiak, tenor Brian Jagde, and baritone Josef Wagner. Marc Albrecht conducts the performance.

Vanessa

Glyndebourne’s acclaimed production of Barber’s opera gets released by Opus Arte. The production by Keith Warner marked the Glyndebourne premiere of the opera. The production starred Emma Bell in the title role, Virginie Verrez, Edgaras Montvidas, Rosalind Plowright and Donnie Ray Albert. The production was conducted Jakub Hrůša.

Die Zauberflöte

From the Salzburg Festival, a new production of Mozart’s popular work comes to DVD. The production stars Matthias Goerne, Mauro Peter, Albina Shagimuratova, Christiane Karg, Adam Plachetka, and Michael Porter. Lydia Steier directs the production with Constantinos Carydis.

Didone Abbandonata

Saverio Mercadante’s rarely performed work comes from the Innsbruck festival. Naxos releases the production by Jürgen Flimm with a cast that includes Viktorija Miškūnaitė,  Katrin Wundsam, Emilie Renard, and Diego Godoy. Alessandro De March conducts the production that OperaWire noted was “precise and detailed reading.”

Enrico di Bordogna

From the Donizetti Opera Festival, Dynamic releases the rarely performed work “Enrico di Bordogna” in a production by director Silvia Paoli. OperaWire noted the production is “a  brilliantly funny and…engrossing piece of theater.” The production comes in a new critical edition celebrating the works 200th anniversary with a cast that includes Anna Bonitatibus, Sonia Ganassi, and Levy Sekgapane. Alessandro De Marchi conducts
