Brian Jagde, Eva-Maria Westbroek & Ailyn Perez Headline Dutch National Opera’s 2019-20 Season

The Dutch National Opera has announced its 2019-20 season featuring a number of new productions, one world premiere, two company premieres, and a many role debuts by some of the top artists in the world.

The season opens with “Cavalleria Rusticana” and “Pagliacci” in a new production by Robert Carsen. Brandon Jovanovich stars as Canio in Leoncavallo’s masterpiece alongside Ailyn Pérez and Roman Burdenko. Brian Jagde leads Mascagni’s opera with Anita Rachvelishvili as Santuzza, Burdenko as Alfio and Rihab Chaieb as Lola. Sir Mark Elder conducts.

Performance Dates: Sept. 5-28, 2019

Anett Fritsch, Angela Brower, Sophia Burgos, Davide Luciano, Sebastian Kohlhepp, and Thomas Oliemans headline a revival of Mozart’s “Così fan tutte” with Ivor Bolton conducting.

Performance Dates: Oct. 3-21, 2019

Leonard Evers’ “Kriebel” makes its world premiere. The work for “Tiny Tots” is set to be directed by Caecilia Thunnissen with Vitaly Medvedev performing the Marimba and Dance and Tiemo Wang on voice and violin.

Performance Dates: Oct. 19, 2019-Feb. 23, 2020 

Martina Serafin sings Brünnhilde in Wagner’s “Die Walküre.” The legendary production by Pierre Audi will also star Eva-Maria Westbroek, Michael König, Stephen Milling, Iain Paterson, and Okka von der Damerau. Marc Albrecht conducts the second installment of the Ring Cycle.

Performance Dates: Nov. 16-Dec. 8, 2019

Isabel Leonard and Lawrence Brownlee headline the first Dutch National Opera production of Rossini’s “La Cenerentola,” directed by Laurent Pelly. Daniele Rustioni conducts a cast that also includes Alessio Arduini, Roberto Tagliavini, and Nicola Alaimo.

Performance Dates: Dec. 3-28, 2019

Claus Guth directs a new production of Handel’s “Rodelinda” with Lucy Crowe in her company debut, singing the title role. Bejun Mehta, Bernard Richter, Lawrence Zazzo, Luca Tittoto, and Katarina Bradić round out the cast with Riccardo Minasi conducting.

Performance Dates: Jan. 14-28, 2020

Andreas Homoki directs a new production of Verdi’s “Nabucco.” The work is being presented for the first time with the company and is set to star Anna Pirozzi, George Petean, Dmitry Belosselskiy, and Alisa Kolosova. Maurizio Benini conducts.

Performance Dates: Jan. 27-Feb 22, 2020

Willem Jeths’ third opera “Ritratto” makes its world premiere with Marcel Sijm directing. Geoffrey Paterson conducts a cast that includes Dutch opera studio artists such as Julietta Aleksanyan, Polly Leech, and Martin Mkhize.

Performance Dates: March 13-19, 2020

“Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny” by Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht gets a new production by Ivo van Hove. The new co-production with the Metropolitan Opera is set to star Doris Soffel, Alan Oke, Sir Willard White, Sean Pannikar, and Nikolai Schukoff. Markus Stenz conducts. 

Performance Dates: March 16-April 5, 2020

Thomas Larcher’s chamber opera “Das Jagdgewehr” gets a new production by Karl Markovics with Michael Boder conducting. The cast is set to include Sarah Aristidou, Giulia Peri, and Olivia Vermeulen. 

Performance Dates: March 17 & 19, 2020

Mathilde Wantenaar’s “A Song for the Moon” comes to the company in collaboration with ENOA. Béatrice Lachaussée directs.

Performance Dates: March 18-25, 2020

Elza van den Heever, Michaela Schuster, AJ Glueckert, Josef Wagner, and Irène Theorin lead Strauss’ “Die Frau Ohne Schatten” in a new production by visionary director Katie Mitchell. Marc Albrecht conducts.

Performance Dates: April 25-May 20, 2020

J’Nai Bridges, Dmytro Popov, Alexander Vinogradov, and Anett Fritsch lead Robert Carsen’s production of Bizet’s “Carmen.” Michael Levine conducts the revival.

Performance Dates: May 12-June 1, 2020

Jakub Hrůša conducts Dvorak’s masterpiece “Rusalka” in a new production by Philipp Stölzl. Brian Jagde and Pavel Černoch alternate the role of the Prince with Eleonora Buratto in her role debut as the title role. Elena Zhidkova, Anna Larsson, and Dmitry Ivashchenko round out the cast.

Performance Dates: June 6-28, 2020 

The season concludes with Jonathan Dove’s community opera “The Monster in the Maze” directed by Marie-Ève Signeyrole.
Performance Dates: June 30-July 4, 2020
